MDA: Hugh Knox, b. 6/24/1851, Ire (probably N. Ire), d. 8/1/1918, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

Hugh Knox's occupations were "Shoemaker" and "Hotel Proprietor."

Hugh's Pennsylvania death certificate lists his father's name and his father's birthplace as "unknown" and his mother's name as "Anna (or perhaps it is 'Ann') Falls" and her birthplace as "Ireland".

Hugh's Pittsburgh Press obit states that he was born in County Antrim and that he was a resident of Pittsburgh for 48 years. His Pittsburgh Gazette Times obit states that he was born in Ireland and came to the U.S. at age 19. Both obits state that he was a member of Loyal Orange Lodge No. 29 in Pittsburgh. It is not known why Hugh settled in Pittsburgh.

Hugh married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Brown. It is not known whether Hugh and Lizzie married in N. Ire or in the U.S. According to cemetary records Elizabeth was b. 12/1854, County Derry. Registration of her death gives her age at death as 53 (which would place her birth in about 1848) and lists her parents as Joseph Brown and Nancy Patterson Brown. Nancy's parents are listed on Nancy's death registration as Sam and Eliza Patterson.

Hugh Knox and Elizabeth Brown Knox had three children:

Joseph Thomas Knox b. 11/10/1874, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania
William James Knox b. 10/21/1876, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania
Essie M. Knox b. 2/1881, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.  Essie m. John Wilson.

Joseph Thomas moved to Ashtabula, Ohio and died there. William James and Essie M remained in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania and died there.

Thanks,

Jim Knox
