Note 1:   Based on a combination of genealogical and DNA data, it's hypothesized that the immigrant ancestors of the first thirteen men in Line No. 1 migrated from Ireland to the North Carolina Piedmont during the mid-1700's.  Their descendants stayed mostly in the southern states of the USA.  The ancestors of the last six participants appear to have stayed in Ireland longer. And in fact, participant no. 126041 still lives in the Finn Valley of Donegal, Ireland. It's not clear which group fits nos. 223333 and 265627 better.

Note 2: At least one researcher believes Gen. Henry Knox of Maine, the 1st U.S. Secretary of War, was from the same extended Knox family as the men in Line No. 1.  Yet another researcher thinks U. S. President James Knox Polk's mother and her father, Capt. James Knox, belonged as well to the extended family of Line No. 1.

Note: This "Mediterranean" haplogroup is rare in the British Isles. It may have been brought there by Roman soldiers before 300 AD, or by traveling merchants during the Middle Ages. It's also the "deep ancestry" of U. S. President Thomas Jefferson, with whom the men in this group may share a common "male line" ancestor who lived well before the common use of surnames in England and Scotland, that is, well before 1400 AD.

Disclaimer: The genealogical information on this page and elsewhere at this website has been furnished mainly by the DNA participants and their sponsors. The Knox DNA Project has not systematically evaluated the data. Therefore neither the Knox DNA Study, its volunteer staff, nor its contractor (Family Tree DNA) make any express or implied warranty as to the accuracy and reliability of the genealogical data presented. Readers are strongly advised to take all such data as hypotheses that should normally be tested and verified against information from primary research sources.

Interpretation of the DNA Data Above:

The members of each relationship group aove (Lines No. 1, 2, 4 and 6) are likely as a rule to share common Knox ancestors with fellow group members inside a "genealogical" time frame, that is, approximately since the widespread introduction of surnames in western Europe during the 15th century.

These groupings are strictly tentative, however, and they will necessarily be revised from time to time. What's more, the identification of specific common ancestors for any group will generally depend more upon conventional "paper" genealogy than upon additional DNA testing.

To the extent that there are mistakes in the groupings, we have tried to err on the side of inclusiveness by using selection criteria broader than those employed by many other surname-tracing projects. One implication is that some of this project's groups may lose members -- or even "break down" -- if all their members should eventually upgrade to 37 or more markers.

Criteria for Determining Relationship Groups:

Where at least one participant has tested for 25 or fewer markers: Members must match 12/12 on the first 12 markers, or at least 23/25 on 25 markers.

Where all participants have tested for 37 or more markers: Members must match on at least 33 of the first 37 markers.

Note on Modal Values within Groups: In cases where a specific marker's modal value is undefined, a value is substituted from among the modal values for all project members with the same haplogroup.

Color coding for Haplogroups:

Green = haplogroup proven by independent SNP test
Red = haplogroup inferred from STR's with > 95% confidence (no SNP test)
Blue = haplogroup inferred from STR's with > 50% confidence (no SNP test)
Black = haplogroup presented with unknown confidence (SNP status not known)
